Water in various forms characterizes the landscape in the northwestern part of the province of Overijssel. Enjoy the excellent bike paths that lead you along rivers, streams and the Zwarte Water as well as through bogs, wet meadows, polder landscapes and swamp forests. Many rare plants and animals, especially birds, find an ideal habitat here, pretty villages and three Hanseatic towns complete the scenic impression. This short tour in Overijssel is very easy to cycle even for the inexperienced.
Day 1 Arrival in Giethoorn
Your tour starts in the "Village without streets" or "Venice of the North". Spread over many islands there are farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries with impressive thatched roofs and almost 200 bridges. The most beautiful way to explore is by punt or canoe.
Day 2 Giethoorn - Blokzjil, 40-65 km / 25-40 mi
You cycle through the largest marshland in Western Europe, the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Two trails of different lengths lead through bogs, swamp forests, wet and reed meadows.
Day 3 Blokzjil - Zwolle, 59-65 km / 37-40 mi
Today you follow the Zuiderzee route along polders, until 1942 the coastline ran here. On the way are the old Hanseatic towns of Kampen, with a cog replica, and Zwolle, the city of the "blue fingers".
Day 4 Zwolle - Giethoorn, 43-58 km / 27-36 mi
Along the Vecht and the Zwarte Water you cycle to the Hanseatic city of Hasselt. From Zwartsluis you cross the wetland Weerribben-Wieden again.
