The Vennbahn Tour, which takes you through four countries, is a real insiders’ tip among cyclists. The Ardennes are a beautiful, sparsely populated low mountain range with lots of forests and the high moor Hohes Venn, parts of which belong to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands. The disused Vennbahn track has been converted into an excellent cycle path, enabling a smooth ride. Nevertheless, you should be fairly athletic or use an e-bike. Aachen and Maastricht, two cities that are definitely worth seeing, are also part of this tour.
Day 1 Arrival in Maastricht
The tour begins in the university town, most of its buildings are listed. Should accommodation here be fully booked, you’ll stay in ‘s-Gravenvoeren, 15 km away. There is free parking at the start hotels.
Day 2 Maastricht - Eupen, 60/45 km / 37/28 mi
The route to Moresnet, which was once a mining town and smugglers’ paradise, leads through a beautiful hilly landscape. A little later you will reach Eupen, the capital of the German community in Belgium.
Day 3 Eupen - St. Vith, 71/60 km / 44/37 mi
Today, you’ll cycle through the Hohes Venn Nature Park. In Kalterherberg, you’ll reach the former Vennbahn track, which allows you to cycle through the Ardennes with few inclines.
Day 4 St. Vith - Clervaux, 55/35 km / 34/22 mi
You’ll cycle through the Belgian-German border area to the impressive Reuland castle ruin, then the tour takes you to Luxembourg. There is an 18 kilometre stretch of hilly terrain that can be avoided by taking the train.
Day 5 Clervaux - Bütgenbach, approx. 64 km/40 mi
In the Our Valley, you’ll start cycling back north. In this quiet landscape with only a few villages, you’ll have to master some climbs.
Day 6 Bütgenbach - Aachen, approx. 68 km/42 mi
You won't meet many people today either, but the Vennbahn Cycle Path is wonderfully smooth. The bustling city of Aachen offers a great contrast in the evening.
Day 7 Aachen - Maastricht, 51/39 km / 32/24mi
Stock up on Printen, a local type of Lebkuchen, before you start your tour through the picturesque Dutch province of Limburg.
